Day 3

Our 3rd day was again filled with time in the car. We went to a summit view in Kona but used the film camera for that sorry. But first a relaxing breakfast in the hotel with a gorgeous view of the pool and beach in the distance.
We drove 3 hours to a black sand beach, painted church and more in a search for sea turtles...but alas we didn't see a single one.
On our way home we did run across Kona Nightingales which are actually "wild" donkeys. They were previously used to transport the Kona coffee and when they were no longer needed they were let go into the wilds of the Big Island. The donkey's did well but there are no lights on the highways in Hawaii and the donkeys would cross the roads unknown to the driving public. In a good situation both would walk away a little shook up. So the donkey's were rounded up and put in to corrals....I spotted them and Derek was kind enough to stop so I could snap photos.
We did make a short trip to the Kaileau volcano. Sadly the sulphuric gases were at a high level almost to unhealthy level. So we took some photos and left hoping to make the trek again.
